Blepharoplasty (eyelid surgery) is a plastic surgery procedure aimed at correcting sagging or drooping eyelid. The skin of the eyelids is very thin and is the first to show signs of aging – drooping or sagging, which can affect a person’s peripheral vision, making it difficult to perform everyday activities such as driving. Blepharoplasty may be necessary when various factors, including aging, sun exposure, smoking, and obesity, cause the muscles and tissues that support the eyelids to weaken.

Why do blepharoplasty?

Blepharoplasty tightens the muscles and tissues of the eyelids, removes excess fat and skin, and corrects sagging skin, significantly improving peripheral vision. It is also performed for cosmetic and aesthetic reasons. Blepharoplasty can be performed on either the upper or lower eyelids, or both (circular eyelid lift), for cosmetic purposes. For a lower eyelid lift, which requires removing fat rather than skin, transconjunctival blepharoplasty is performed. Transconjunctival blepharoplasty involves making an incision inside the lower eyelid, so there is no visible scar, and the fat is removed. This procedure does not affect vision, but results in a younger, fresher appearance.

It is important for the patient to have realistic expectations before undergoing cosmetic blepharoplasty. Although the procedure improves appearance and self-confidence, it does not radically change the face.

Blepharoplasty methods

There are two types of eyelid lifts – non-surgical and surgical.

Non-surgical eyelid lift methods

There are several methods of non-surgical lifting:

  • Laser eyelid lifting is a new method of performing blepharoplasty, in which a laser is used to correct facial anomalies or improve the beauty around the eyes.
  • Plasma lifting is a new non-invasive procedure that minimizes the signs of aging with minimal recovery time.
  • Hardware lifting – uses the method of myostimulation and microcurrent therapy.
  • Thread eyelid lifting – the introduction of special threads into the subcutaneous tissue, which reinforce the tissues, that is, fix them in the desired position.

The advantage of non-surgical methods is that the price of an eyelid lift is much lower than that of surgery, and the recovery period after the procedure does not exceed one week.

Operating room – endoscopic eyelid lift

Eyelid lift surgery is performed in a clinic on an outpatient basis, requiring sedation and local anesthesia. General anesthesia may be used for “sensitive” patients. Patients may choose to have the procedure on the upper or lower eyelid, or both. The procedure can take anywhere from 45 minutes to 2 hours, depending on whether the upper and lower eyelids are being treated. If the upper eyelid is being treated, the incision is usually made along the natural crease of the eyelid. Once the incision is made, fat deposits are repositioned or removed, muscles and tissue are tightened, and excess skin is removed. On the lower eyelid, the incision is usually made just below the lash line to allow for the removal of excess skin.

After the procedure, the incisions are closed with stitches, tissue glue, or surgical tape and usually covered loosely with gauze to allow the area to heal.

Contraindications

The best candidates for blepharoplasty are those who are in good general health, do not smoke, do not have serious eye diseases, and have healthy facial tissues and muscles. People with eye diseases, including glaucoma or retinal detachment, thyroid disease, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, or high blood pressure should not have blepharoplasty.

Rehabilitation after blepharoplasty

Within two weeks after the procedure, any swelling and bruising will subside, and most patients can return to work within 10 to 14 days. Even after you return to your normal routine, you will continue to gradually recover for several weeks after surgery.

Price

Given that these treatments vary depending on the specific areas you want to target, the average price for an upper blepharoplasty can range from €1,850, a lower blepharoplasty from €2,200, and a circular blepharoplasty from €3,150.

Short answer: completely without stitches — no, but there are techniques without visible scars. When people say “no stitches,” they usually mean transconjunctival blepharoplasty, which involves: access through the inner side of the lower eyelid no external incisions no visible scars Important:If excess skin needs to be removed, an incision is still required — which means micro-sutures will be used (very fine and almost invisible). What is blepharoplasty? Blepharoplasty is a plastic surgery procedure on the eyelids aimed at correcting age-related or anatomical changes in the eye area. Blepharoplasty (eyelid surgery) is one of the most popular aesthetic procedures, designed to correct drooping upper eyelids, under-eye bags, and a tired or aged appearance. Turkey—especially Istanbul—has become one of the leading destinations for this surgery thanks to its high medical standards, experienced surgeons, and more affordable prices compared to Europe, Canada, and the United States. However, despite appearing to be a relatively simple procedure, blepharoplasty requires maximum precision and a highly professional approach. Errors in the eyelid area are immediately noticeable, and the final result depends directly on the surgeon’s experience and accurate surgical planning.
